Gov. Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi on Monday advised Fulani women engaged in milk selling to imbibe modern dairy production introduced by his administration.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Bagudu-led administration has established modern dairy production plants in Birnin Kebbi, Maiyama, Gwandu and Bagudo, among other local government areas of the state for processing cow milk into yoghurt.
NAN also reports that the state government had in previous years trained 500 beneficiaries from pastoralist communities on modern dairy production to improve local milk and livestock production in the state.
Interacting with the Fulani women at Ficcinga in Gulumbe District of Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area, the governor urged them to take advantage of the new methods to boost their revenue base.
According to him, the main objectives of the scheme is to modernise local cow milk processing in addition to easing the difficulties faced by milk sellers who trek long distances to hawk their products.
The governor observed that milk processed through modern methods lasts longer before expiration, thereby minimising losses.
Bagudu directed the authorities concerned to provide portable drinking water to the Fulani settlements at Ficcinga towards alleviating acute water scarcity in the hamlets.
NAN reports that last year, the state government distributed livestock and chicken to 2,778 pastoralists under the Accelerated Agricultural Development Scheme Aids in the state to diversify the economy and increase the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).
The project also featured presentation of motorcycles and milk cans to 10 milk collectors to collect and transport the fresh milk to livestock investigation and breeding centre at Bulasa in Birnin Kebbi Local Government for processing. (NAN)
