Chief Onwurah Agility, the Founder, Nollywood Yam Festival, says the festival has recorded achievements in the last 10 years in promoting national unity and peaceful co-existence in the country.
Agility said this on Saturday night at the 10th Anniversary of the Nollywood Yam Festival and Award Night in Abuja.
According to him, the significance of this festival is unity because many people eat yam irrespective of their tribes or ethnic background.
The three-decade actor said, “The significance of the Nollywood Yam Festival is unity and we dedicate this event (being the 10th edition) to peace in Nigeria.
“We started this festival 10 years ago to ensure that our youths understand some of our culture, heritage and values.”
According to him, this year’s festival is dedicated to the nation’s peaceful co-existence.
“If you look around, you will see Hausas, Yorubas, Igbos and other ethnic groups. Everybody is happy and I want it to continue like this in Nigeria.
“Nigeria is one country and Nigerians are one. We are all Nigerians. We need to understand the importance of unity in our diversity to move Nigeria to the next level,” he said.
He expressed optimism that the festival would continue to unite Nigerians and move the country forward.
In his remarks, the National President, Actors Guild of Nigeria, Emeka Rollas, said that the festival is a symbol of unity.
Rollas described yam as common food eaten by many people irrespective of tribes or ethic background.
According to him, this festival has really united us as a people.
“You can see our traditional rulers representing Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba communities in this festival,” he said. (NAN)
