The Senate has given its approval for President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, aligning with the earlier decision of the House of Representatives. This move grants the president the constitutional authority to enforce emergency measures aimed at addressing the ongoing political crisis in the state.
In accordance with the amended 1999 Constitution, the National Assembly has also mandated a review of the situation within six months, or earlier if deemed necessary. Furthermore, a joint committee comprising members from both legislative chambers will oversee the administration of Rivers State throughout the emergency period.
To facilitate a peaceful resolution, the Senate has proposed the formation of a mediation committee made up of eminent Nigerians. The committee will be tasked with engaging key stakeholders in the state’s political landscape to restore stability and ensure a return to normal governance.
The decision follows months of political turmoil in Rivers, largely stemming from a power struggle between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. With the emergency rule now in effect, the Senate’s intervention aims to foster dialogue and prevent further escalation of tensions in the oil-rich state.
