A military base in Sabon Gari, Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State was reportedly attacked on Monday evening, with conflicting accounts emerging about the incident. Local sources initially claimed that Boko Haram insurgents launched an assault on the base, firing sporadically and causing several casualties among the soldiers. According to one resident, Abba Usman, reinforcements rushing to the scene reportedly triggered a landmine, leading to an explosion that may have increased the death toll.
A military source confirmed that an attack did occur and that many soldiers were killed; however, no specific casualty figures were provided. In contrast, Borno State Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Usman Tar, later stated that the incident was not a coordinated attack but rather an improvised explosive device (IED) incident in Wajiroko under Damboa. According to Tar, one soldier lost his life and another sustained injuries when the IED was triggered by military personnel.
Adding to the complex narrative, a spokesperson for Operation Hadin Kai, Lt. Col. A.Y. Jingina, noted via text that he was out of station and that Sabon Gari falls under Sector 2, offering limited details on the ongoing situation.
In a broader context, the incident comes as the Nigerian Army continues its efforts to enhance operational readiness amid security challenges. The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, recently called on commanders and leaders to collaborate closely with security agencies, civil society, and traditional institutions to address evolving threats. During the four-day First Senior Command and Leadership Seminar in Lafia, Nasarawa State, Oluyede emphasized strategic communication and situational awareness as key to countering terrorism and achieving long-term national stability. Representatives at the seminar, including Maj. Gen. Abubakar Sadiq Ndalolo and Maj. Gen. Hilary Nzan of the 4 Special Forces Command, stressed the need for innovation and shared best practices to transform military operations.
