In a compelling interview on Arise TV’s “The Morning Show” at 9 a.m. today, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central leveled serious allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, accusing him of sexual harassment and subsequent political retaliation. She claimed that her refusal to acquiesce to Akpabio’s alleged advances has led to deliberate obstructions in her legislative duties.
Akpoti-Uduaghan recounted a specific incident from December 8, 2023, during a visit to Akpabio’s residence in Akwa Ibom State. She alleged that Akpabio inappropriately held her hand and suggested they spend “special moments” together. She stated, “My husband heard him and later told me not to travel abroad alone or be with the Senate President alone.”
She further detailed challenges in advancing a motion related to the Ajaokuta Steel Company, alleging that Akpabio obstructed her efforts. According to Akpoti-Uduaghan, Akpabio insinuated that her success was contingent upon making him “happy.”
In response, Senate President Akpabio, through his media consultant Kenny Okulogbo, dismissed the allegations as “tissues of lies.” Okulogbo suggested that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s claims stem from her dissatisfaction after being removed as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Local Content. He stated, “She is just angry because she was removed as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Local Content.”
This is not the first time Akpabio has faced such allegations. In July 2020, Joy Nunieh, the former Acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), claimed she slapped Akpabio for allegedly sexually harassing her. Nunieh stated, “I am the only woman that slapped Akpabio. He thought he could come up on me. He tried to harass me sexually.”
The interview has ignited a fervent response on social media platforms. Many users have expressed outrage and called for a thorough investigation into the allegations.
