Security, Shi’ites Clash During Protest In Abuja

Tensions flared in Abuja on Friday as members of  Shi’ites, clashed with Nigerian soldiers during a protest against what they described as “injustice against Palestinians by Israel” in the Gaza Strip.

The protest, which took place at Bannex, Ademola Adetokunbo Crescent, Wuse 2, saw a large turnout of Shi’ite members demanding action on behalf of Palestinians. The demonstration quickly escalated into violence, with heavy gunfire reported as military personnel intervened to disperse the crowd.

This protest came just hours after the United States Embassy in Nigeria issued a security alert, warning American citizens about planned IMN protests in Abuja and other major cities. The alert listed several potential protest locations, including Banex Plaza, Berger Junction, Unity Fountain, and key landmarks such as the National Mosque and Al-Noor Mosque.

As the situation developed, the protestors’ calls for solidarity with Palestinians were met with a heavy security presence, highlighting the ongoing tensions between the military and Shi’ite members. The incident has sparked further concerns over security and the potential for increased unrest in the capital.
