In response to the escalating crises of drug abuse and domestic violence in North-West Nigeria, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has launched a comprehensive sensitization campaign. Collaborating with the National Orientation Agency (NOA) and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), this initiative aims to address the root causes of these pressing social issues.
Recent data reveals a 25% surge in drug abuse across the North-West over the past three years, with Kaduna State experiencing a 28% increase in drug seizures in 2023 alone. Currently, an estimated three million individuals—approximately 12% of the region’s population—are grappling with substance abuse. Concurrently, nearly 35% of women nationwide have endured domestic violence, with figures in Kano State reaching up to 40%. These statistics underscore the urgent need for multifaceted interventions.
The NDLEA has responded robustly, seizing over 9.9 million kilograms of illicit drugs and arresting 57,792 suspects between 2021 and 2024. Beyond enforcement, the agency is spearheading awareness campaigns and rehabilitation programs to curb the crisis. NDLEA Chairman, Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd.), emphasized the necessity of a collaborative approach, involving government entities, community leaders, and civil society organizations, to effectively combat these challenges.
Speaker Abbas has called upon religious and traditional leaders, educators, and community stakeholders to unite in addressing the underlying factors contributing to drug addiction and domestic violence. He advocates for job creation, enhanced educational opportunities, and robust law enforcement as pivotal strategies to mitigate these issues. The sensitization campaign, themed “Stop Drug Abuse and Domestic Violence in Our Communities,” seeks to engage directly with affected populations, fostering a culture of awareness and prevention.
Experts warn that without immediate and concerted action, the rising incidences of substance abuse and domestic violence could further destabilize the region. The collaborative efforts of the government, NDLEA, community leaders, and citizens are crucial in implementing sustainable solutions to safeguard lives and restore stability in North-West Nigeria.
