Recruitment Waivers: Nigerian Government Mandates Transparent Recruitment In Federal Tertiary Institutions

By Kabiru Abdulrauf.

In a move aimed at promoting fairness and integrity in Nigeria’s higher education sector, the Federal Government has mandated all federal tertiary institutions to adopt a transparent and competitive recruitment process.

Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, issued the directive following the approval of recruitment waivers granted to institutions based on their documented manpower needs. The announcement was made in a statement released by the ministry’s Director of Press, Boriowo Folasade.

According to the directive, all federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education must publicly advertise available job vacancies in at least one national daily newspaper, on their official websites, and in relevant academic and professional journals.

“This directive is in line with the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring open access and equal opportunity for all eligible Nigerians seeking employment in the education sector,” the Minister stated.

Dr. Alausa also emphasized that institutions must submit their recruitment requirements to the Ministry for evaluation by the Committee on Waiver and Recruitment. The Ministry has instituted strict monitoring mechanisms and warned that non-compliance will attract appropriate sanctions.

This latest move is part of a broader push to strengthen transparency and accountability across Nigeria’s federal institutions.
