A powerful rainstorm has left hundreds homeless in Kabba, the headquarters of Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, after destroying numerous houses and public buildings.
The storm, which struck on Monday evening, was accompanied by strong winds that tore off rooftops and caused extensive damage to homes, schools, and businesses. Among the worst-hit areas are the Federal Government Girls’ College (FGGC) Kabba, Iyah community, Ben Thomas Hotel, and Kajola Quarter.
Residents say many affected families, including women and children, have been left without shelter and are currently seeking refuge with friends and relatives.
Confirming the damage at FGGC Kabba, the school’s Principal, Mrs. Olayinka Amosun Eniola, said no casualties were recorded but noted that several buildings, including classrooms and hostels, were significantly damaged.
Similarly, Chief Shuaib Ipinmisho, Chairman of the Parents-Teachers Association (PTA), described the destruction as overwhelming, stressing that it had severely impacted students and staff accommodations. He added that the extent of damage was beyond what the school or PTA could handle alone.
Efforts to reach Kogi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) Secretary, Muktari Atima, for comments were unsuccessful. However, an official from the agency confirmed that authorities were aware of the situation and planning a visit to assess the damage and provide necessary relief.
Residents and local authorities are now calling on the state and federal governments, as well as well-meaning individuals, to intervene and provide urgent assistance to those affected by the storm.
