President Tinubu Flags Off Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Road Reconstruction: A New Chapter for Northern Nigeria’s Infrastructure

In a significant move to enhance Nigeria’s infrastructure, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially launched the reconstruction of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano federal highway. This critical artery, spanning approximately 375.4 kilometers, is vital for the socio-economic activities of Northern Nigeria, linking the Federal Capital Territory with key northern states.

The reconstruction project, initially awarded in 2018, faced delays and contractual challenges. Under President Tinubu’s administration, the project has been revitalized with a clear directive for completion within 14 months. The Minister of Works, David Umahi, emphasized the government’s commitment to delivering a durable and efficient roadway, incorporating reinforced concrete pavement designed to last between 50 to 100 years .

The highway reconstruction is divided into three sections: Abuja to Kaduna, Kaduna to Zaria, and Zaria to Kano. The project aims for completion by May 2025, aligning with the administration’s infrastructure development goals .

The decision to re-award the contract stemmed from previous delays and cost escalations. The original contractor, Julius Berger, faced termination due to non-compliance with revised terms and failure to remobilize, leading to a re-evaluation of the project’s scope and budget . The revised contract, now valued at approximately N740.79 billion, reflects a strategic shift towards cost-effective and long-lasting construction methods .

The Federal Government has restructured the project to ensure efficiency and accountability. The revised plan includes the installation of solar-powered streetlights to enhance safety and visibility. The Ministry of Works has outlined a comprehensive approach to expedite construction while maintaining quality standards .

The successful completion of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano highway is expected to significantly boost economic activities by improving the transportation of goods and people across the region. It will also enhance security and connectivity, fostering regional integration and development.

As the reconstruction progresses, the Federal Government remains committed to transparency and efficiency, ensuring that this vital infrastructure project meets the highest standards and serves the needs of Nigerians for decades to come.
