Police Withdraws Invite To Emir Sanusi, To Obtain Statement In Kano

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has withdrawn its previous invitation to Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi, the Emir of kano in connection with the violent incident that occurred during the Sallah celebration in the State on March 30, 2025. Initially, the invitation was issued to the Emir to allow him to provide an account of the events that led to the breakdown of law and order in the state.

However, following guidance from key stakeholders and in an effort to maintain professionalism and avoid any political interpretation of police actions, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has ordered that the invitation be rescinded.

Instead, operatives from the Force Intelligence Department (FID) have been directed to travel to Kano to obtain emir Sanusi’s statement directly.

The Nigerian polices describe the shift in approach as part it effort to ensures that the investigation proceeds with the highest level of integrity, without any external influence or misinterpretation.

The unfortunate series of events leading to this investigation began prior to the Sallah celebration, when intelligence reports indicated that two Emirs in Kano Alhaji Ado Bayero and Alhaji Lamido Sanusi were planning separate Durbar Festivals.

The Durbar, a traditional festival featuring an Emir riding a horse around the city, has long been a part of the region’s cultural heritage.

Sequel to An agreement reached that no Durbar festival would take place on Sallah Day to ensure public safety, the IGP  sent DIG Abubakar Sadiq, to mediate with the two Emirs and the Kano State Government.

However, despite this agreement, Emir Sanusi attended Eid prayers in his car and later mounted a horse in a procession after the prayers, accompanied by local vigilantes. This action sparked a confrontation with local, resulting in the tragic death of Usman Sagiru and several others being injured.

In response, the Nigeria Police Force has made several arrests related to the incident, and Alhaji Sanusi was initially invited for questioning. The IGP reiterated the Force’s commitment to impartial investigations, stating that all those found responsible for the violence will face justice. The Police also emphasized that its actions are based on the principles of justice, neutrality, and professionalism.
