Peter Nwachukwu, Husband of Late Gospel Singer Osinachi, Sentenced to Death by Hanging

Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, has sentenced Peter Nwachukwu, husband of the late gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, to death by hanging. The verdict was delivered on Monday, April 28, 2025, after the court found Nwachukwu guilty of culpable homicide in connection with his wife’s death on April 8, 2022.

The prosecution, led by Mrs. Aderonke Imala from the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, presented 17 witnesses, including two of the couple’s children, and submitted 25 exhibits during the trial. Nwachukwu testified in his own defense, called four additional witnesses, and tendered four exhibits. Despite pleas for leniency from his counsel, Reginald Nwali, the court imposed the death sentence, emphasizing the severity of the crime.

In addition to the death sentence on Count 1, Nwachukwu received multiple prison terms and fines for related offenses, including spousal abuse and cruelty to children. Specifically, he was sentenced to two years imprisonment each on Counts 2, 3, 8, 9, 12, 13, and 18; six months imprisonment on Count 10; three years imprisonment on Count 11; and fines of ₦500,000 and ₦200,000 on Counts 6 and 7, respectively.

Osinachi Nwachukwu’s death had sparked national outrage and brought attention to issues of domestic violence in Nigeria. The court’s decision marks the conclusion of a case that has been closely followed by the public and media alike.
