The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting educational institutions in the region, announcing plans to build new hostel blocks and provide alternative power solutions for the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT).
Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the NDDC Managing Director, made this commitment during a visit from the UNIPORT Governing Council, led by Chairman Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, to the Commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt.
Ogbuku emphasized the Commission’s readiness to collaborate with UNIPORT and other regional institutions for mutual development. He highlighted previous projects undertaken at the university and expressed eagerness to continue building partnerships.
The NDDC plans to construct new hostel blocks and install a 300 KVA solar inverter system at the university’s Senate building to reduce reliance on diesel power. Additionally, Ogbuku announced plans to deploy engineers to assess the university’s roads and hostels for possible rehabilitation.
“We are committed to action, not empty promises. We are determined to bring President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to life,” Ogbuku stated, marking the Commission’s 25th anniversary and reaffirming its commitment to driving development in the Niger Delta.
Senator Ohuabunwa commended the NDDC’s leadership and urged continued support for UNIPORT, highlighting the university’s infrastructure challenges. With a student population of 50,000 and only 5,000 hostel spaces, he appealed for help in securing gas turbines to ensure stable power supply for students.
The Vice-Chancellor of UNIPORT, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, thanked the NDDC for its ongoing interventions and congratulated Ogbuku on his recent commendation from President Tinubu. Looking ahead, Georgewill expressed hope for continued collaboration and invited the NDDC to participate in the university’s upcoming 50th-anniversary celebrations.
