Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has signed a new two-year contract extension, committing his future to the club until 2027 and ending months of speculation over his long-term plans.
The 33-year-old Dutch international was entering the final year of his current deal, which was set to expire in the summer of 2025. The new agreement ensures the Reds’ defensive stalwart will continue to lead the line at Anfield for at least two more seasons.
Van Dijk joined Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018 in what was then a world-record fee for a defender—£75 million ($95m/€90m). Since then, he has become a cornerstone of Jürgen Klopp’s team, making nearly 300 appearances and helping the club to win both the Premier League and Champions League titles.
The Dutchman was handed the captain’s armband in 2023 following Jordan Henderson’s departure to Saudi Arabia, further cementing his role as a leader in the dressing room.
Speaking after signing the new deal, Van Dijk said there was no hesitation in staying.
“There wasn’t any doubt in my head that this is the place to be for me and my family,” he said. “I’m of Liverpool. Someone called me an adopted Scouser the other day—I’m really proud to hear that. It gives me a great feeling.”
He acknowledged that while discussions about his future had been ongoing, his focus remains fully on the club’s current campaign.
“I feel very good—physically, mentally—and I’m having fun,” he said. “Discussions have been ongoing with the right people, and when it’s time to make a decision, the media will know. But for now, my full commitment and focus is on Liverpool and being successful this season.”
The extension provides much-needed stability as Liverpool prepare for life after Jürgen Klopp, who has announced he will step down at the end of the 2024/25 season.
Van Dijk’s decision to stay on signals continuity and leadership, a crucial boost as the Reds look to maintain their competitive edge domestically and in Europe.
