The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has initiated an investigation into sexual harassment allegations leveled against Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central.
This development follows Akpoti-Uduaghan’s six-month suspension from the Senate, which she claims is linked to her accusations against Akpabio.
The IPU, a global organization of national parliaments, has acknowledged receipt of Akpoti-Uduaghan’s formal complaint and is committed to examining the matter thoroughly.
In a communication to the suspended senator, the IPU stated its intention to hear from both the Nigerian Senate and Akpabio before reaching any conclusions.
Akpabio has categorically denied the allegations, asserting that they surfaced only after Akpoti-Uduaghan’s seating arrangement and committee assignments were altered. He emphasized his respect for women and dismissed the claims as unfounded.
The Nigerian Senate has refrained from launching an internal investigation, citing the absence of a formal petition. Senate spokesperson Adeyemi Adaramodu clarified that no official complaint has been submitted to warrant such action.
Civil society organizations and political entities have expressed divergent views on the issue. While some groups perceive the allegations as politically motivated attempts to tarnish Akpabio’s reputation, others, including the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), have called for his temporary removal to facilitate an impartial investigation.
As the IPU proceeds with its inquiry, it remains uncertain how this investigation will impact the dynamics within Nigeria’s legislative framework.
