INEC Urges National Assembly to Expedite Electoral Reforms Ahead of 2027 General Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on the National Assembly to promptly conclude the review and amendment of Nigeria’s electoral legal framework to ensure adequate preparation for the 2027 general elections.

During a recent retreat in Lagos, INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu emphasized the necessity of timely legislative action to facilitate the implementation of any new electoral laws. He highlighted that previous retreats have led to significant reforms, such as the enactment of the Electoral Act 2022.

The retreat, attended by members of the National Assembly’s Joint Committee on Electoral Matters, focused on identifying and addressing challenges within the current electoral system. Discussions included proposals for early voting, diaspora voting, and the allocation of special seats for underrepresented groups.

Stakeholders at the retreat underscored the importance of continuous electoral reforms to enhance transparency, inclusivity, and public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic processes. They also stressed the need for collaboration between INEC and the legislature to ensure that electoral laws are responsive to emerging challenges.
