On Thursday morning, members of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) staged a protest at the Ministry of Steel Development Complex in Wuse 2, Abuja.
The unions, led by Eche Asuzu, picketed the building, demanding better welfare for workers within the ministry and protesting against what they called unjust sackings and a ban on workers’ rights to practice unionism.
The aggrieved workers barricaded the main gate of the ministry’s headquarters, preventing staff members from accessing their offices. Carrying placards with various messages and chanting solidarity songs, the demonstrators voiced their opposition to what they described as the Federal Government’s mistreatment of ministry employees.
Among their key demands were improved wages, the reversal of sackings, and the restoration of workers’ rights to freely engage in union activities.
This protest follows a series of demonstrations across the country, including those staged earlier in the week by the Take-It-Back Movement, which called for a reversal of the state of emergency in Rivers State and raised other national concerns.
The ongoing industrial action highlights growing frustration within the workforce and the continued pressure on the government to address issues related to worker welfare across different sectors.
