In a move to combat environmental degradation and uphold public health standards, the Lagos State Government has sealed 13 major markets across the state over persistent violations of waste disposal regulations.
This decisive action was announced by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle. Wahab stated that the clampdown is in strict adherence to the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017, which seeks to promote responsible waste management and restore order in public spaces.
Among the affected markets are the bustling Ketu and Mile 12 markets, which were sealed for repeatedly disposing of waste on roads, medians, and highways—despite numerous warnings.
Wahab emphasized that these enforcement actions are necessary to safeguard public health and restore order to our public spaces, noting that the government would no longer tolerate actions that compromise the city’s cleanliness and safety.
The sealed markets include, Erukan Market, Mile 12, Oja Oba Market, Ketu, Owoseni Tundas Market, Oba Ogunjobi Market, Mile 12, Shops at BRT Terminal, Mile 12, Mile 12 Bus Stop Shops, Ketu Terminal Market (6 plazas), Ifesowapo Shop Owners Market, Mile 12, Demurin St Plaza Shops, Ketu, Occupants at 6 Demurin Road, Ketu.
Others include, Ifelodun Market, Ketu, Ibadan Unit 1 Park (between Babajide Sanwo-Olu Market and Ikosi Fruit Market), Ketu Tipper Garage
The government reiterated its commitment to a sustainable, livable Lagos and urged market stakeholders to take responsibility for maintaining a clean environment. As legal action continues—with a suit filed by AN on April 7, 2022—officials warn that further violations will not be tolerated.
