Former military leader, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), has set the country buzzing with the launch of his memoir, A Journey in Service. What was meant to be a reflection on his years in power has instead opened old wounds, igniting heated debates about Nigeria’s past, especially the annulment of the historic June 12, 1993, election.
One of the most controversial claims in the book is Babangida’s attempt to shift the blame for the annulment. He suggests that the late General Sani Abacha played a major role in the decision, hinting that it was beyond his control. This has not sat well with many Nigerians, who see it as an attempt to rewrite history.
In response, Sadiq Abacha, son of the late General Abacha, took to Facebook to defend his father’s legacy. “The man Abacha—you have always been the one they envied with silent deceit. History shall remember you for being a better leader,” he wrote, suggesting that the criticisms against his father are fueled by jealousy.
Adding to the controversy, an open letter titled “Abacha’s Legacy Shines Where Yours Faltered” has been making rounds on social media. The letter accuses IBB of using the memoir to clear his name while blaming others who are no longer alive to defend themselves. “Your memoir has stirred the pot once more,” it reads, calling Babangida’s version of events into question.
Renowned human rights lawyer, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, also weighed in, stating that Babangida’s book is “filled with allegations against dead men and women who can no longer speak for themselves.” He questioned why IBB waited so long to share these details, calling it a one-sided narrative.
Social media reactions have been mixed. While some admire Babangida’s willingness to speak on past events, many remain skeptical. On Instagram, former Minister Femi Fani-Kayode praised IBB’s “expression of regret” over the annulment, while on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter), heated debates continue, with many questioning the timing and sincerity of his confessions.
IBB’s memoir has undeniably reignited discussions about Nigeria’s past. But whether it is a brave telling of history or an attempt to reshape his legacy depends on who you ask. What’s clear is that the story of June 12 remains unfinished, and the battle over its true narrative is far from over.
