The House of Representatives is set to investigate unsolicited linking of National Identification Numbers to subscribers’ lines without their consent by telecom service providers.
Adopting a motion of urgent public importance, the House notes that legitimate NIN holders are being exposed to criminal activities due to unauthorized linking of their NIN to unknown phone numbers.
Lawmakers described the trend as a violation of the right to privacy while calling for the protection of personal data of every Nigerian, as guaranteed in the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023 and the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation of 2019.
In other resolutions, the House urged the security agencies to flush out bandits still carrying out criminal activities in parts of the country.
The House mandated its Committees on Police Affairs, Army and Interior to ensure legislative compliance with the resolution and report back in four weeks.
