In a significant development, the House of Representatives has given its approval to President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. The move, originally announced by Tinubu on Tuesday amid a prolonged crisis in the state, suspends Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the entire Rivers House of Assembly for a period of six months. A single administrator has been appointed to oversee the state during this period of emergency.
According to the Constitution, however, the emergency rule requires the consent of at least two-thirds of the National Assembly to be fully implemented. At Thursday’s plenary session, Speaker Abbas Tajuddeen conducted a voice vote, with the majority of the House in favor of the emergency measure. Tajuddeen later confirmed that 243 members were present, based on the day’s attendance register.
During the session, Rep. Ali Isa JC, known as Earlirr, moved a motion to amend the duration of the emergency, suggesting that the six-month period be reconsidered and potentially shortened. His proposal was seconded by Rep. Miriam Onuohs, indicating that while there was substantial support for the emergency rule, some legislators are calling for a review of its length.
