The Kebbi State Governor, Comrade Dr Nasir Idris has donated Five Million Naira (N5m) and three big bulls to complement feeding of newly posted corps members at the state’s orientation camp at Dakingari.
This is contained in a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to Kebbi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Idris issued to Journalists in Birnin Kebbi on Tuesday.
Idris quoted the governor as saying this at the swearing-in and opening ceremony for 2023 batch “C” stream 1 corps members held at the permanent orientation camp, Dakingari in Suru Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Yakubu Bala-Tafida, the governor congratulated the newly posted corps members for successfully scaling through the rigours of their academic pursuit and being found worthy in learning and character which qualified them to be mobilised for national service.
The governor advised them to consider their call-up for national service to be a remarkable turning point in the history of their life, while urging them to view it as an opportunity to achieve a major breakthrough by way of contributing their quota to the development of their fatherland.
“This clarion call which you have answered today should transform you into being better citizens and good ambassadors of this nation.
NYSC has over the years been able to prepare youth to become successful leaders in various endeavours.
“As you venture into the threshold of carving an important niche for yourselves, I enjoin you to be steadfast in your personal and group efforts towards the realisation of the noble objectives of the scheme, please imbibe the spirit of hard work and remain faithful to the noble ideals of our founding fathers.
“The nation as a whole has been tormented by a lot of social ills that have eaten deep into the fabrics of our national life,” the governor observed.
He informed them that their predecessors in Kebbi State have contributed immensely to the development of the state in the areas of environmental sanitation, education and other key sectors of the economy.
“We expect you to build on their past sterling achievements and even surpass them by standing out in raising high the flag of unity in the land of equity,” he pleaded.
While confirming that Kebbi State had been known for peace, Gov. Idris also told them that their safety in the land of equity was well assured.
“Already, various security agencies in state have been directed to double their efforts towards giving maximum security to corps members.
“The State Government on its part will continue to do everything possible to see to your general welfare and wellbeing.
“We have put in place necessary measures to ensure that necessary motivation is given to our corps members serving in every nook and cranny of the state,” he noted.
Gov. Idris implored them to be responsible and disciplined citizens of Nigeria, adding that the orientation programme was specially designed to instill in them the right attitude and arm them with leadership qualities required to become future leaders.
Earlier, the NYSC Director General, Brig.-Gen. Yushau Dogara-Ahmed said the purpose of the orientation course was to equip corps members with practical social and leadership skills that would enable them to face the challenges of the service year ahead.
The DG, who was represented by NYSC Coordinator in Kebbi State, Mrs Okolo Agatha-Banki said the orientation course was also designed to give corps members adequate physical and mental training, to instill discipline, and to imbibe in them the spirit of collective responsibility as an important ingredient for nation-building.
“I must also emphasise that the orientation camp is highly regimented. It gladdens my heart to inform this gathering that since the commencement of this orientation course, this batch of corps members have been outstanding in their response to training.
“They have quickly acclimatised to the Camp environment and have been engaged in activities. This is highly commendable,” he noted.
The DG lauded Gov. Nasir Idris for supporting the NYSC Governing Board Chairman/Commissioner for Youth Development Alhaji Nura Bala-Fingila over the needs of the NYSC in the state as presented to him and pleaded for more kind consideration and intervention.
He urged the corps members to uphold a high sense of discipline, tolerance and proper understanding of the essence of the orientation course and challenged them to work towards distinguishing themselves for honours and awards right from the camp, by actively contributing their quota to the success of the orientation course.
The Kebbi State Chief Judge, Justice Umar Abubakar, who was represented by Justice Hassan Shehu-Kuwa administered the oath of allegiance to a total number of 1572 corps members posted to Kebbi State.
