The Federal Government has initiated an immediate investigation into the recent jailbreak at the Koton Karfe Custodial Centre in Kogi State. Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, described the incident as “unfortunate” and emphasized the government’s commitment to recapturing the escaped inmates. 
In the early hours of Monday, March 24, 2025, twelve inmates escaped from the medium-security facility. The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed that, as of now, five of the escapees have been recaptured. Tragically, one correctional officer lost his life during the incident.   
Dr. Tunji-Ojo has directed the Acting Controller General of the NCoS, Sylvester Nwakuche, to visit the facility to assess the situation and conduct a comprehensive audit to determine the circumstances surrounding the escape. He also highlighted the government’s plan to leverage advanced biometric systems and existing technological solutions to aid in the recapture of the remaining fugitives. 
The Kogi State government has assured residents that it is collaborating closely with security agencies to investigate the cause of the jailbreak and implement measures to prevent future occurrences. Efforts are ongoing to locate and apprehend the remaining seven escapees.
