The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has initiated legal proceedings against MultiChoice Nigeria Limited for ignoring regulatory orders concerning a subscription price increase. This legal action comes after MultiChoice proceeded with a price hike despite the FCCPC’s clear directives to halt the adjustment until further investigation.
On February 27, 2025, the FCCPC instructed MultiChoice to suspend its proposed subscription price rice for both DStv and GOtv services, expressing concerns about the impact on Nigerian consumers already burdened by high subscription costs. The directive was issued while the FCCPC reviewed the reasons behind the proposed increase.
In direct defiance of the FCCPC’s order, MultiChoice implemented the price hike on March 1, 2025.
As a result, the FCCPC filed charges at the Federal High Court in Lagos, accusing the company of obstructing the investigation and disregarding regulatory instructions.
This legal move emphasizes the FCCPC’s concerns over potential market abuse and anti-competitive practices in Nigeria’s pay-tv industry. The commission aims to protect consumers from unfair pricing tactics and ensure that companies adhere to regulatory guidelines that foster a fair market environment.
MultiChoice Nigeria has yet to comment on the legal proceedings.
