Justice took center stage in Lafia on Thursday as a Chief Magistrate Court sentenced a football fan, Bashir Bala, to three months’ imprisonment—or the option of a fine—for assaulting Plateau United midfielder Vincent Temitope.
The incident unfolded after a tense Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) encounter between Nasarawa United and Plateau United at the Lafia City Stadium, which ended 3-2 in favor of the home side. Bala, a resident of Lafia and believed to be a supporter of Nasarawa United, was arrested and arraigned on charges of assault, criminal force, and public disturbance.
During the court session, Bala pleaded guilty to all charges, leading to a swift conviction. The judgment comes amid widespread condemnation from football stakeholders and fans, who have called for stricter security and zero tolerance for pitch-side violence.
Initial reports alleged that Temitope had been stabbed in the altercation. However, Nasarawa United’s Director of Media, Eche Amos, clarified that the player only sustained a minor bruise during a scuffle, reportedly caused by Bala’s sharp fingernails. According to the club, the conflict began after Temitope allegedly attempted to use a plastic chair against a spectator.
Temitope has since returned to training, downplaying the incident and affirming his commitment to helping his team in upcoming fixtures.
The ruling sends a strong message against fan violence in Nigerian football, reinforcing the league’s stance on safety and professionalism in the sport.
