The 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, has cancelled this year’s Sallah festivities in a bid to maintain peace and security within the state. In a recent broadcast, the Emir expressed his regret over the decision but emphasized that the safety of lives and property remains his highest priority.
The decision was made in light of rising tensions and potential risks associated with holding the festivities. The Emir stressed that the well-being of the people comes before tradition.
The Emir noted that his decision was influenced by discussions with respected religious leaders and other concerned stakeholders, highlighting a collective commitment to maintaining order.
Following a statement from the Emir “Following the people’s mandate bestowed upon us and our commitment to their protection, we find it necessary to withdraw any arrangements made for the Sallah celebrations given the current situation. Sallah Durbar is not a do-or-die affair for us. If it risks becoming a source of chaos, loss of lives, or destruction of property, then it is best to shelve it.”
The cancellation follows earlier communications from Bayero, in which he had notified the police of his intentions to hold the Durbar. This decision comes amid concerns over potential violence, particularly as another prominent figure, Muhammadu Sanusi—the 15th Emir of Kano—was also planning a similar event.
The Emir extended his apologies to the people of Kano and urged them to support the decision, emphasizing that safeguarding peace is essential for the state’s well-being.
