Bandits Ambush and Kill 10 Community Guards in Zamfara, Death Toll Rises to 22 in One Month

In a tragic escalation of violence in Zamfara State, bandits ambushed and killed 10 operatives of the Zamfara State Community Protection Guards and local vigilantes on Saturday. This incident raises the death toll of security personnel to 22 within a month, highlighting the persistent security challenges in the region.

The attack occurred in Adabka village, Bukkiyum Local Government Area, where the security operatives had intercepted the bandits following an earlier assault on Sabuwar Tunga community. A fierce gun battle ensued, resulting in casualties on both sides. Residents reported that while the bandits also suffered losses, they managed to retreat with their dead and injured, making it difficult to ascertain their exact number.

This incident is part of a series of violent encounters in Zamfara State. In October 2024, eight members of the Community Protection Guards were ambushed and killed near Tsafe town, Tsafe Local Government Area, while manning a checkpoint aimed at curbing kidnappings along the Gusau-Funtua Highway. The guards had been effective in reducing abductions in the area before the attack.

The Zamfara State government has reaffirmed its commitment to combating banditry without engaging in negotiations with the perpetrators. Governor Dauda Lawal emphasized that this policy is yielding results, with peace gradually returning to the state.

These recurring attacks underscore the urgent need for enhanced security measures to protect communities and support local security operatives who are at the forefront of combating banditry in Zamfara State.
