In a landmark recognition of excellence in strategic communication, Olufemi Soneye, Chief Corporate Communications Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), has been named the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) Spokesperson of the Year 2025.
The award, announced during a prestigious ceremony in Abuja, saw Soneye triumph over top contenders including Shell’s Igo Weli, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi of the Nigeria Police Force, Olumuyiwa Akande of Sifax Group, and NIMASA’s Osagie Edward.
Soneye’s journey to the top honor began with a win in the “Distinguished Spokesperson (Oil and Gas)” category, where he outshone strong challengers like Chief Chinedu Ukadike of IPMAN and again, Shell’s Weli. This is his second consecutive recognition by the NIPR, having secured the oil and gas category in 2024.
Described by the NIPR as “diligent” and “strategic,” Soneye was praised for his expertise in crisis management, shaping public opinion, and delivering impactful messaging. According to Dr. Shaibu Hussein, Chairman of the Adjudication Committee, the selection process was “intense and thorough,” involving communication experts, PR professionals, and media stakeholders.
Hon. Joshua Audu Ghana, Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Power, presented the award, confirming that Soneye will be celebrated as the titleholder throughout 2025.
In his acceptance speech, a visibly moved Soneye dedicated the award to the NNPCL communications team. “This award is not mine alone; it represents the hard work and dedication of our entire team at NNPCL,” he said, earning a standing ovation.
