President Bola Tinubu has extended warm congratulations to Mark Joseph Carney on his election as the 24th Prime Minister of Canada following the Liberal Party’s victory in the country’s recent parliamentary elections.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu hailed the outcome as a hard-fought and significant triumph, coming at a pivotal moment when Canada requires experienced and steady leadership.
The Nigerian leader praised Carney’s extensive credentials, noting that his impressive background in economics and global finance positions him well to steer the country through current challenges. Carney previously served as Governor of the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013 and later as Governor of the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020—making him the only individual to have led the central banks of both countries.
President Tinubu also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Canada, highlighting key focus areas such as education, climate change, and migration.
“The President looks forward to building a vibrant and forward-looking partnership with Prime Minister Carney’s administration,” the statement read, while also acknowledging the cordial relations developed under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Tinubu expressed optimism that the two countries can expand their cooperation and forge deeper ties that reflect shared values and mutual goals in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
