In response to the recent surge in data costs, the Nigerian Senate has mandated it Committee on Communications to investigate the issue and recommend solutions for a more sustainable and business-friendly telecommunications sector. This decision follows a debate on a bill sponsored by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, which highlighted the financial strain the price hike has placed on millions of Nigerians, particularly young people who rely on affordable internet access for their livelihoods.
The bill pointed out that the over 200% increase in data costs has created significant challenges for Nigerians, especially the youth, who depend on the internet for work, education, and business activities. As part of the resolutions, the Senate also called on the Federal Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy to engage with telecommunications providers to review data pricing and ensure that it remains fair and affordable.
Several factors contributing to the rising costs were identified, including poor infrastructure, high import duties on ICT equipment, excessive regulatory charges, and the rising costs of energy due to an unreliable national grid. Lawmakers also highlighted the increasing operational risks and security concerns faced by telecom providers.
