The political landscape in Rivers State has been thrust into uncertainty as the State House of Assembly initiates impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu. On March 17, 2025, the Assembly issued a notice of alleged gross misconduct to both officials, signaling the commencement of a constitutionally mandated process that could lead to their removal from office. 
The Assembly’s actions are anchored in Section 188 of the Nigerian Constitution, which outlines the procedure for impeaching a governor or deputy governor on grounds of gross misconduct. While the specific allegations have not been publicly disclosed, the move underscores escalating tensions within the state’s political hierarchy. 
This development is not occurring in isolation but is deeply intertwined with the intricate power dynamics within Rivers State. Notably, the Assembly members orchestrating the impeachment are perceived to be loyal to Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former governor of Rivers State. This allegiance suggests that the impeachment proceedings may be influenced by internal party politics and personal loyalties, rather than solely by considerations of governance and public interest. 
The impeachment move has elicited varied reactions from different segments of the Rivers State populace. The Ijaw National Congress (INC) and the Rivers State Elders and Leaders Forum have expressed strong opposition to the impeachment plans, particularly emphasizing the significance of Governor Fubara being the first Ijaw individual to hold the gubernatorial position in the state. They argue that his removal would not only disrupt governance but also marginalize the Ijaw community, thereby exacerbating ethnic tensions within the state. 
In the midst of these political maneuvers, the Rivers State House of Assembly has adjourned its plenary sessions indefinitely. This adjournment coincides with Governor Fubara’s attempts to present the 2025 budget, raising concerns about the potential for a governmental standstill that could adversely affect the state’s administration and service delivery. 
The initiation of impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara and Deputy Governor Odu highlights the complex interplay of constitutional processes, political allegiances, and ethnic considerations in Rivers State. As the situation unfolds, it remains imperative for all stakeholders to prioritize the principles of justice, equity, and democratic governance to ensure that the state’s stability and the well-being of its citizens are upheld.
